Emery Kaison at 2024 VIC Figure Skating Championships

About Emery

Ranked #2 in Australia, Intermediate Men

I’m Emery Kaison Nguyen (born Alan Nguyen), an Australian figure skater who’s been on the ice since November 2021. In just a few years, I’ve gone from my first casual skating session to winning multiple titles and medals in men’s singles. My journey hasn’t been easy, but every challenge I’ve faced has pushed me to work harder and fall even more in love with this sport.

About Emery Kaison

Since discovering skating in late 2021, I’ve dedicated myself to training and competing, earning 15 gold, 3 silver, and 7 bronze medals, passing 6 ISA tests (Preliminary up to Basic Novice), and performing with Stars On Ice Australia at Bondi Fest, Winter Fest, Campbelltown Chill Fest, and Darling Harbour.

Now, I’m competing in the Intermediate Men division and preparing for the 2025 Crystal Challenge in Melbourne, my pathway to qualifying for the Australian National Championships. With no State or National qualifiers in NSW this season, I’ll be traveling interstate to keep chasing my goals.

My Journey

I grew up in South Western Sydney and attended Hurlstone Agricultural High, Australian Christian College, and Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. At 16, I had to leave home due to family conflict and violence, spending time in youth refuges before transitioning to independent living.

It was during this time that skating became more than just a sport. It became a space where I found structure, resilience, and a supportive community. The rink has been my second home ever since, shaping not just my career but also who I am as a person.

Training & Focus

I train 3 to 5 days a week, for up to 6 hours a day, focusing on refining my technique and preparing for competitions. I also work with interstate coaches during the season to develop my skills further and ensure I’m ready for key events.

Right now, my priorities are landing consistent double jumps across all my programs, preparing for the double axel, and building toward my first triple jumps. These goals are all part of my preparation for the 2025 season, including Crystal Challenge in Melbourne and, if I qualify, the Australian National Championships.

Goals Looking Ahead

In the short term, I’m focused on earning the NSW and VIC State titles and qualifying for and winning Nationals in the Intermediate Men division. These milestones are stepping stones to competing at a higher level nationally. I’m also working toward consistently landing my double jumps in competition.

Looking further ahead, my ambitions go beyond just this season. I want to defend State and National titles as I move up divisions, continue building my skills to be competitive internationally. My ultimate long-term dream is to represent Australia at the 2030 Winter Olympics.
