Emery Kaison at 2024 VIC Figure Skating Championships

About Emery

Ranked #1 in NSW and #2 in AUS, Intermediate Men

I’m Emery Kaison Nguyen (born Alan Nguyen), an Australian figure skater who first stepped onto the ice in November 2021. In just a few years, I’ve grown from a casual skater to a multi-title medalist in men’s singles. The journey hasn’t been easy, but every challenge has driven me to work harder and deepened my love for this sport.

About Emery Kaison

Since discovering skating in late 2021, I’ve dedicated myself to training and competing, earning 17 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze medals, along with several state titles. I’ve successfully passed six ISA tests (Preliminary to Basic Novice) and have performed with Stars On Ice Australia at Bondi Fest, Winter Fest, Campbelltown Chill Fest, and Darling Harbour.

Alongside my skating career, I study at the University of Notre Dame, completing Foundation Studies and progressing toward a Business degree.

I’m currently competing in the Intermediate Men division and preparing for the Queensland and Victorian State Championships, the final stage before the Australian Nationals. I’ve earned the opportunity to represent New South Wales after placing first at NSW State Championships.

My Journey

I grew up in South Western Sydney and attended Hurlstone Agricultural High, Australian Christian College, and Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. At sixteen, I had to leave home due to family conflict and violence, spending time in youth refuges before transitioning to independent living.

During that time, skating became more than a sport, it became my space for structure, resilience, and belonging. The rink has been my second home ever since, shaping not only my career but also the person I’ve become.

Training & Coaching

I train 3 to 5 days a week, for up to 6 hours per day, focusing on refining technique, improving consistency, and preparing for upcoming competitions. My home rink is Ice Zoo in Sydney, where I train under the guidance of Andrew Dodds and Chris Stuart.

During the season, I also work with Katya, Jordan Dodds, and Darian Kapitch in Brisbane, and Cailin O’Keefe in Melbourne. Training across different states allows me to learn from a diverse team of coaches, each offering unique perspectives that help me continue developing both technically and artistically.

Off the ice, I train at Emerge Martial Arts with Spencer Goggin and Logan Esau, focusing on strength, balance, and body awareness through martial arts and conditioning. I also take ballet classes to enhance posture, coordination, and musicality, qualities that strengthen my performance and expression on the ice.

Goals Looking Ahead

My current focus is on the Queensland and Victorian State Championships, where I aim to qualify for and win the Australian National Championships in the Intermediate Men division. Each milestone brings me closer to competing at a higher national level as I continue building consistency with my double jumps in competition. I’m also working toward landing my double Axel and developing my first triple jump, the triple Salchow.

Looking further ahead, my ambitions extend beyond this season. I hope to defend state and national titles as I move up divisions, continue building the skills needed to be competitive internationally, and progress toward higher-level jumps and stronger artistic performance. My long-term goal is to represent Australia at the 2030 Winter Olympics.
